PT MUSI HUTAN PERSADA
PT Musi Hutan Persada, established in March 1991, is a joint venture company between PT Inhutani V (state company) and Marubeni Corporation (Japan) concentrating on development and sustainable management of industrial forest plantation. Under the decree of the Minister of Forestry No.038/Kpts-II/1996 dated January 29, 1996, PT Musi Hutan Persada was granted a license to manage an Industrial Forest Plantation in South Sumatra covering an area of 296,400 hectares. The primary objectives of plantation development of the company are improving environmental quality, increasing land productivity, providing job opportunities and increasing regional income.
Early vegetation of PT Musi Hutan Persada was alang-alang grassland (Imperata cylindrica), shrubs and degraded forest that were especially for traditional crop growing and was also unproductive land. Since 1999 PT Musi Hutan Persada commenced harvesting and supplying timber to the pulp mill PT Tanjung Enim Lestari Pulp & Paper. The main species grown by PT MHP is Acacia mangium.Which was chosen for the following reasons:
- Acacia mangium is a fast-growing tree (can be harvested for pulpwood on 6 years)
- Easy to apply to poorer soils with relatively high PH content
- Produces good raw material for pulp and paper. Acacia mangium pulp quality is similar to Eucalyptus pulp quality that is already acknowledged in pulp market around the world
- Silviculture is relatively easy from seedling production to planting and maintenance in the field
